Description

A Bistahieversor sealeyi (9 m) attacking a Parasaurolophus tubicen (10 m), Utah, 75 million years ago.

As I mentioned before, North America`s megafauna from the Campanian is quite plentiful and well understood. Amongst it we have quite a varied number of different tyrannosaur species.

While Tyrannosaurus rex seems to have held a monopoly troughout the western landmass known as Laramidia as its sole apex predator during the Maastrichtian, the Campanian shows a much grander variety of tyrannosaur species that seem to have diverged and been segregated geographically.

Both the Kaiparowits Formation and the Kirtland Formation from the American south-west show us a whole host of similar, but still different dinosaurs from those found in Alberta and Montana at around the same time.

Among them is Bistahieversor sealeyi. At 9 m long and 2.5 tons in weight, it was the largest land predator in southern Laramidia 75 million years ago, with only Teratophoneus curriei (assuming the 6 m long holotype was indeed a subadult) being potential competition.

Like most giant tyrannosaurs, it would have gone after the very big ceratopsians, hadrosaurs and ankylosaurs that roamed the Four Corners during the Campanian.
